When going through a divorce, learning how to prioritize essentials is a great tool to have in your tool belt. You have so much to do, and so little time. From meeting with lawyers, gathering documents, maintaining a schedule, cooking dinner, establishing a home, keeping your children in check, dividing assets, sleeping… it seems that every day you wake up with a million things on your plate. So, how do you conquer it all? The answer is simple: you don’t. When it comes to managing your life through a divorce, the best choice you can make is to prioritize essentials.

Once you can begin to chip away at the excess things, or set them aside for now, you’ll find that you can begin to move forward, and actually take a breath every now and then. But, when you have the kind of nature where you’re always taking life by the horns, how do you draw back?

Prioritize Essentials: Staying Sane through Divorce

You have a ton of things that need to get done every single day. From the average schedule, to the added burden of divorce proceedings. So, start by writing it all down. Make yourself a schedule for the entire week. Include every single thing you have to accomplish every single day. Even if you feel it’s a petty thing, such as doing laundry— write it down. Once you have responsibilities and goals written down, it can be easier to prioritize essentials and set aside the rest.

If you find yourself unable to cut anything at all per day, set yourself a number. Four to six priorities per day is a lot. If you conquer 6 things a day for 6 days a week, that’s 36 tasks you’ve already accomplished. If you do that all seven days? 42 tasks. Seeing the number out there might just help you realize that you can tone it down, and still conquer the week.

Start early

One of the best ways to accomplish your goals, and still take a bit of time to unwind, is to start early in the morning. If you can’t sleep anyways, or if you’re just an early riser, use that time to knock out some of your goals and get your day prepped up for success. The easiest time to get things done, is when there are no distractions, no kids to take to school, and everyone is sleeping. If you can’t seem to find sleep, use that time to make your day just a little bit slower. Start with your most difficult task, and move towards the easiest. Taking this route is the easiest way to reward yourself for a day of hard work.

No one said you have it easy…

In fact, you’re going through an extremely difficult time. You have days filled with carrying on, rebuilding, and trying to bring an end to a bad chapter. However, the end result will be all the more satisfying if you’re able to prioritize essentials, cut out the rest, and create a routine for yourself where you’re getting things done and saving time for yourself…
