Getting divorced can have you feeling a lot of different ways. One feeling many people struggle to deal with is divorce embarrassment. This embarrassment can really eat a person up inside. However, it’s also something which you can overcome…

Divorce Embarrassment

Feelings of failure

Many people trace their divorce embarrassment from feeling like a failure. To them, a divorce means they’ve failed to succeed at something important in their lives. The thing is, that isn’t exactly the case. While your marriage may not have worked out, that doesn’t mean you’ve somehow “failed” in life.

In fact, divorce shouldn’t be the “defining” moment in your life. Rather, it’s just one small bump in the road. You still have a whole lot ahead of you in the future. Instead of feeling like you’ve failed, try to get excited for the new experiences you can enjoy on your own terms.

Other people’s reactions

Divorce embarrassment can also stem from worries about how other people will react. Divorce is a private matter, but sooner or later you’ll have to tell others what’s going on. While you might only tell friends and family, you can still feel somewhat embarrassed when breaking the news.

Still, you might be surprised at just how supportive people tend to be of people they know are divorcing. After all, divorce is becoming much more common then it was in the past. Sadly, it is possible that some people might react negatively. Just know that they are in the minority, and you’re better off avoiding them.

Being a bad example

Divorce embarrassment doesn’t have to just come from worrying about how other adults react. In fact, it might come your kids. Some people feel like that by divorcing, they’re setting a bad example for their kids. Instead of giving them a “normal” family, they’re turning things upside down.

However, you’re actually setting a good example. By divorcing, you’re telling your kids that it’s okay to make changes in order to be happy. It might be hard for them to understand now. But in the future, they’ll learn to understand what you did and why it was for the best.
